Versace and Aguilera put out Milan fashion lights
03/04/2003 - yahoo
'There are so many things I love about Donatella and her clothing. I think
it is strong, it's sexy, empowering and she's a powerful woman in the
industry and I respect that,' the 22-year-old star told Reuters before
Versace showed her autumn/winter 2003/4 collection. Donatella, who took
over the design house from her brother Gianni after he was shot dead in
1997, showed both the younger, diffusion label Versus and the top-line
Versace collection back to back, with hair back-combed and big in the
first and sleek and stylish in the second. Color was kept to a minimum
at Versace, a surprise at the house known for its head-turning brights,
but it did not skimp on the revealing cuts red-carpet regulars love it
for. Joining the fashion fest's fever for all things mini and clingy,
teeny skirts and drainpipe trousers in creams and caramels were matched
with crocodile-skin spikes and zips and tassels on anything that could
take their weight. Underwear as outwear ruled the last part of the show
as it had in the spring/summer collection, with long-cut corsets straight
out of Aguilera's dressing-up box that curved round the bottom fanning
out into long, lacey skirts split to the crotch. The 1980s time-warp came
on more strongly in the Versus line, which was chock-full of bright turquoise
blues and mustard golds chopped up into bold prints on leggings, skinny
mini-dresses, furs and towering stilettos. Aguilera, her platinum hair
ringleted and loose and wearing a dark pink Versace dress, sat quietly
as models strutted round the pod-shaped catwalk, turning once in a while
to whisper to a friend. 'This collection...is all about Christina,' Versace
said of the pop idol who set men's hearts racing in her latest video 'Dirrty'
crawling through a mud-wrestling ring in knickers and bra. 'High pants,
low waists and very sexy, very strong, leather. I wish the models could
dance like her and it would be perfect,' Versace added before the show,
lounging back in a red-leather armchair surrounded by roses. But despite
the champagne, the stars, the strobes and the army of supermodels, applause
was sparse and the audience was largely unimpressed. 'It was disappointing.
Some of the dresses were pretty but it was mainly just a lot of tights,'
one U.S. writer said, leaving the show's warehouse venue on the outskirts
of the fashion capital.
Aguilera 'Beautiful' Atop British Pop Charts
03/02/2003 - yahoo
The American pop star, who recently unveiled a raunchy new image, topped
the British singles charts for the second time in three months with the
gentle ballad 'Beautiful,' the latest release from her million-selling
album 'Stripped.' Aguilera hit No. 1 in Britain last November with 'Dirrty.'
Spanish DJ and producer DJ Sammy slid in at No. 2 with his re-dub of Don
Henley's 1980s classic 'The Boys of Summer,' a current dance favorite.
Russian duo Tatu -- their name means 'This Girl Loves That Girl' -- slipped
from top spot to third with 'All the Things She Said.' The song's video
features schoolgirl outfits and a lesbian kiss and was banned by the BBC.
Also new this week was Danish duo Junior Senior who entered at No. 4 with
'Move Your Feet.' 'Keep Me A Secret' from Ainslie Henderson, who found
success on the BBC television program 'Fame Academy,' debuted at No. 5.
Solo Spice Girl Melanie C -- aka 'Sporty Spice' -- jumped in at No. 7
with 'Here it Comes Again,' the first release from her new album 'Reason.'
